Christmas

Tomorrow we are leaving to go home to NC for a week for the holidays. We're pretty excited that we get to see our families!

I'm sitting here reading blogs and listening to Christmas music (Rejoice and Be Merry! from last year's Concert on Temple Square -- we got to go this year because one of our friends is in the Orchestra, and it was amazing, I'll have to get the CD when it comes out), but I really should be cleaning the apartment and packing for our trip. Our flight leaves at 7:10 AM tomorrow!

Hopefully I'll get it done...

Cake Wrecks Rock. No really, they do.

If you've never heard of the blog Cake Wrecks, you're missing out. This is a blog full of pictures of professional cakes gone "horribly, hilariously wrong" -- to quote the tagline. There are some classics here. Today's post was especially funny...the commentary is quite clever. Here's the permalink to today's post: When Gangsters Go "PC". Go there. Now. And then go through the archives. And laugh.

Joy to Everyone

An early Christmas present.

Go here. Watch the video. Read the story. It's beautiful. You won't regret it.

And pass on the joy.

Thanksgiving

Here we go, pictures and all!

It was so fun to be able to spend Thanksgiving with Husband's family. He is the youngest of 3 boys, all of whom are now married (the oldest got married just a month after we did). Though there was the usual family drama that is a part of nearly all extended family things, I think that overall the trip was a resounding success.

For more pictures and details, you can go to my sister-in-law Mommydew's blog. Her Thanksgiving post can be found here. There are some pretty fun pictures of Husband with our 4-year-old nephew! (Mommydew and I agree that they are basically twins born 19 years apart...she calls me all the time with stories about her son that end with "I'm raising [your husband]!" Plus, they even look alike.)

I don't really feel like writing out a bunch of details about what we did every second of every day that we were there. I'll let the pictures tell the stories. Unfortunately, I always either forgot to take my camera or forget that I have it with me whenever we were with Husband's other brother's family. I've got some cute ones of the others, though, as well as the group family portraits that we took on Saturday.

Maybe someday I'll feel like writing more details, but don't count on it. Just know that it was a wonderful vacation!

One night Niece wouldn't go to bed, so she came with me and Husband into Nephew's room (where we were staying) to read books. She read Fancy Nancy, and she handed me another book to read. Then we switched. Then we switched back. Then we switched again. You get where this is going...

Reading more Fancy Nancy. (If you've never heard of Fancy Nancy before--I hadn't before Mommydew mentioned them once--look it up, it's pretty cute.)

The book I was "reading." Dragons. Awesome.

Husband and Niece :)

Mommydew and Husband and I were able to do a session at the Dallas Temple on Saturday evening. (Kevin stayed home with the kids.) These aren't the best pictures because it was so dark, but at least they show that we were there!

This is how I took the last picture. They laughed at me. What, it was efficient!

Me and Husband and the Temple.

Being silly. (Husband's idea.)

Me and my sister[-in-law, but really just sister] and the temple.

Isn't she pretty?

[I have a picture of Husband and Mommydew, but it's turned the wrong way and I don't really feel like editing it right now. I'll post it later.]

The temple and its nativity, which I thought was beautiful. I have a closer-up of just that, but for the sake of shortening this post just a little bit, I'll refrain.

Now this is one sweet little girl! Also feisty.

I was trying to get a picture of the kids with their Granny and Papa, but as you can see, Nephew didn't cooperate. This one makes me laugh.

The kids wanted to take pictures. Niece took this one of me.

Nephew had to agree to the condition of letting me take this picture of him before I'd let him play with my camera...you know, a picture of him actually smiling instead of hiding. Cracked me up.

And here's the one he took of me. He caught me with a weird smile :)

The family portrait.

Father and sons.

And one of just us.

For Ashley

Here are the rules:
1. Link the person who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules on your blog.
3. Tell about six quirks you have, only 6!
4. Tag six fellow bloggers to do the same.
5. Leave a comment to let them know.

--------

SO I was tagged for something almost exactly like this more than a year ago on a different blog before I got married and started this one. I'm copy-and-pasting, but I'll add in some edits and such in a different color. This tag was to tell 6 random things about myself. Since most of those things were quirks anyways, I figure it counts :)

--------

1. When I eat, I chew my first bite with the left side of my mouth, and the second with the right side, and back and forth. I have to make sure that I will eat my last bite with the right side, even if I have to divide what's left into tiny bites. [It drives me nuts if this pattern somehow gets interrupted. I MUST bring balance back to the force! And by the force, I mean my existence.]

2. I always start walking with my left foot. I count my steps, too. Too much marching band in high school, I think. But I did this before that, so... [Are we noticing a pattern yet? BALANCE.]

3. I do things in multiples or 8, or more accurately, powers of 2. Eight is just my favorite [and since 8 is a power of 2, all multiples of 8 are also powers of 2, and therefore GOOD]. For example, if I'm eating something like Goldfish crackers or M&Ms, I get 8 at a time. I can eat 1 set of 8 (2^0) or 2 sets of 8 (2^1) or 4 sets of 8 (2^2) or 8 sets of 8 (2^3), but not 3 sets or 5 sets or 6 sets....you get the idea. So I can do something 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 (etc) times, but not 24 or 48 or 96, even though these are all multiples of 8. [My husband thinks it's hilarious to kiss me three times in a row and then dodge my efforts to get a fourth. IT KILLS ME. He plays the same game with 7.] [TMI?? sorry] [Also, I just realized that it is weird that I like 8 the most (2^3), but I don't like 3...I'll just call this another quirk. Even though I have finally (and I mean finally, it's taken forever) realized that this is weird, it doesn't change my feelings about the number 8.] [I'm so strange.]

4. I love to visit old cemeteries and could get lost in one for hours. I find them peaceful and calming, not creepy. If it is a cemetery where some of my ancestors are buried, I try to find them and remember how we are related. If it is a random cemetery, I like to look for the oldest grave I can find, or I read all the poems carved on the stones. They're really awesome poems, all about love and hope. [I haven't done this in a couple of months...I think a trip to Heber is in order!] [Heber City is this little bitty town here in Utah about an hour from where I live. Both of my mom's parents grew up there, and their families had been there for generations...I love that town, and the cemetery is simply wonderful.]

5. I have a stubborn streak a mile wide. [I deleted a bunch of stuff here because it isn't relevant right now. BUT I do have a stubborn streak, just ask Husband.]

6. I'm a bit of a clean freak when it comes to the kitchen. I can't explain it, it's just how it is. If the kitchen is dirty, I can't stand to be in it to cook, so I don't eat. When I have my own kitchen, it will always be clean. [I do ok at this, usually. But sometimes school catches up to me, and I find myself slacking...It's clean right now, though! And for the record, I still don't eat when it's not clean, because it still drives me absolutely crazy, and I hate it hate it hate it even when I don't have time to fix it.]

--------

EDIT(s):

(1) I originally had all my new comments in red, but then I published it and looked at it and it CLASHED HORRIBLY with my background, so I had to change it. I guess that's another quirk. (RE-EDIT: I think I have changed the color almost EVERYTIME I have changed my background.)

(2) Go look at the dash marks separating the sections of this post. You will notice that there are always exactly 8 of them.

--------

As far as tagging goes, I tag everybody who reads this, partly because I know there aren't many, and partly because I'm not really sure who they are...So if you read this and want to participate, go for it!

01 December 2008

Made it

We've been home for almost 12 hours.

We left Texas yesterday around 1 pm, or noon Utah time. We got home at 8 this morning.

Then we slept until 2.

Then I skipped class.

And Husband got called in to a flood at work. Apparently he's on call. And there were people still at work, but he's the one that had to go do it. Poor guy.

I'll do a Thanksgiving post soon. And I'll do that tag, Ashley.

Hope you all had a good holiday!

24 November 2008

By the way...

Remember Husband's toe? (Scroll down)

He finally went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and got it fixed! Hooray!

He gave in when it started growing in on the other side. I just don't get why he didn't go sooner.

The doctor supposedly did something that will prevent it from growing back in. I hope it works!

----------------

Also, I put in a couple of work orders with maintenance this morning. They've already come! That was quick...

Our furnace quit working, a pipe in the bathroom started leaking, and the light in our bedroom burned out...all within a couple of days. They've fixed the light and the furnace, and they just left to get a tool to fix the pipe.

Maintenance = the best.

Updates and farewells

I've done it again.

Sorry.

Here's what is going on (I'm probably forgetting a lot of things, sorry):

1. School. Boring and tedious a lot of the time. Some of my teachers are not so nice about some assignments. But I'm still doing well in all of my classes (I think), and they're almost done. I have one class this evening, and then nothing until next week. There are two weeks of classes left, and finals. It makes me happy.

2. My house is clean, yay. Well, almost. I just have a couple more things to do and then it will be all perfect.

3. We bought a vacuum.

4. I'm still working in the temple. I got to work two shifts last week. I love that place. Oh, and if any of you happen to know someone who is a sister ordinance worker in the Provo Temple who will be around this week, please let me know. I still haven't been able to find someone to cover my shift on Friday morning (it's early, but it's worth it). If you know someone, please please email me ASAP! Although, I kind of doubt any of you know anyone. Oh well.

5. We're leaving TONIGHT for our Thanksgiving trip! I get out of class at 7, then we're going to our friends' house at 7:30 for family night, and we'll probably leave right after we leave there, unless I have a couple more things to finish up first, like packing. I'm almost done, but not quite. So we'll probably leave at 9 or 10. WE ARE SO EXCITED. We'll be driving all night and hopefully arriving at our destination tomorrow around dinnertime. It's about an 18-20 hour drive (depending on who you talk to), so wish us luck. We'll be staying with Husband's brother and his wife and family until probably Sunday, when we'll leave to head back home and get here in time for my Monday evening class (Husband doesn't have to be back at work until Tuesday). And on Saturday, we're doing family portraits with all of Husband's immediate family: parents, both brothers, two sisters-in-law, 1 nephew, and 3 nieces. That should be fun.

6. We bought plane tickets for a trip back home for Christmas. We'll get there the evening of the 23rd and will leave really early (our flight is at 6:30 am) on the 30th. We're so glad we get to go!

That's all for now. I probably won't post while I'm gone, but I'm taking my camera so hopefully I'll have a lot of pictures for my next post when I get back.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE. Count your many blessings.

Happy Halloween, yesterday

Last night we went to a Halloween party with a few of other couples from our ward. It was supposed to start at 6, so at 5:45 I started getting worried about the fact that we didn't have costumes...I even googled "easy last-minute Halloween costumes for couples." Oh yes, I did. Didn't end up using any of the ideas, but I did come up with something. At the last moment. Some people got it right away, and some people didn't, so I'll let you guess based on our pictures. I don't have a cool giveaway prize or anything, sorry. I think most of you will get it, but I'm just curious... Without further ado, here are our Halloween pictures.

Carli, the best 80s newscaster ever.
Pat and Carli. The denim vest and the metallic wrap shirt are the epitome of cool.

Playing the Wii: Princess Peach/Mario and Mystery Guy :)

Princess Peach/Mario. He even got his sister to put makeup on the Princess Peach side! Hahaha.

Adam and Karen, creepy old ladies with babies on their backs. Yeah.

Karen and the headless baby.

Jen and Tim, they are so cute.

Not much chance they'll get their jerseys mixed up!

Ruth as a cute 80s girl. She also had lime green fingernail polish. And green eyeshadow.

Ruth and Brady. The faux-hawk = awesome. Also the pom-pom leg warmers.
Ruth says that the saddest thing is that she bought most of the outfit at normal stores...
The 80s are back, and that's scary.

Grant and Kelsey. She had inch-long fake eyelashes and some of the coolest earrings ever.

Zoomed in on Grant's clown shoes...wow.

Here we are. Husband threw my arm out like that at the last moment, it hurt.

That's better. So what are we?

I actually really like this one. Husband cracks me up.

The END!

I guess I forgot to post these

Here are some of the bride-and-groom shots from our wedding. I meant to post them at the same time I posted the others a few weeks ago, but I forgot. Sorry. Again, I'm going to post them in chunks. Enjoy.

I have two brothers

And they're both awesome. And sometimes silly.

Brother1 is in Colorado now. He is in the Aurora Highlands area. This happens to be an area where most of the missionary lessons they teach are in Spanish. His companion only speaks limited English. Brother1 speaks some Spanish because he took several semesters in high school and converses with my dad (who is fluent in Spanish because of the mission he served to Venezuela back in the early 80s), but he isn't fluent, and he was technically called to be an English-speaking missionary. He'll be fine, though. If there is anyone who can be just fine in an area where he doesn't really speak the language, that person is Brother1. He's just good at that sort of thing. I couldn't be prouder of him!

Brother1 went into the MTC (Missionary Training Center. There are several in various parts of the world, but the main one is here in P-town, and that's where Brother1 went. The length of time you spend in the MTC is based on whether or not you learn a new language and on what that language is) at the beginning of October, so he and my dad flew out a couple of days early and stayed with me and Husband. It was so much fun to have them here! Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures, and when I finally remembered it was right before we were leaving to drop Brother1 off at the MTC, and my battery was dead. Oops. But Brother1 took a bunch of pictures with his camera. He is allowed to email immediate family once a week, so hopefully he'll be able to send those to me soon.

And then there is Brother2. He's a funny kid. We had a little text message conversation today. I couldn't stop laughing.

Him: Hey sis do you know if they have byu sweatpants at the byu bookstore?
Me: I don't know, but I'd say it's likely.
Him: If they do that would be a good Christmas present.
Me: For you, you mean?
Him: You are exactly right.
Me: We'll see. I'll think about it. [That's because they might be rather expensive.]
Him: You should think about it.

They do, by the way. I checked.

A conversation with my sister

(She's 12)

Me: I don't know what I'm going to make for dinner.

Sister: I have a great idea! Go in the kitchen and open the cupboards and look for stuff that would go together. Voila!

Me: Oh gee thanks, that was a brilliant idea.

16 October 2008

Last One. Really.

I know, I know. I go weeks (or at least days) without posting, and then I post several things all at once. I really don't know what my deal is. Sorry.

But this is the last one tonight. It is, I promise!

We finally have our professional wedding pictures. It only took 6 months for them to get from the photographer to my mother to me. Oh well. I got to see proofs online after just a few weeks. Now I have them all on CD so I can make as many copies as I want :)

Here are a few of them, just for fun. Collage style. Because collages are cool. And because I can post more pictures that way :) Anyways, enjoy them. These are just the ones with groups of people.

I'll have to post the couples shots another day. I'm getting tired. My bed calls to me. And besides, Friday is my early day...I'll be at the temple by 6! It's my favorite part of the week.

Yes, Another Post Tonight

You can't say I didn't warn you.

So just a moment ago in my last post, I mentioned that today wasn't the best day ever. I had some assignments that were not going well, and some panic issues, etc. So that was fun. And really, this whole week has been extremely stressful.

That is why this post is going to be about things that have made me happy this week. Look for the silver lining, you know. This, my friends, is what it's all about.

1) A letter from my missionary brother.

2) A husband who will do laundry and make dinner while I am doing homework...without even being asked!

3) A teacher who was unexpectedly understanding and kind. I think this might have had something to do with the fact that I was sobbing and shaking uncontrollably. (Let's just say that I do NOT do well in debate situations.) But hey, all's well that ends well.

4) Friends who will listen to me and comfort me even when I'm being irrational and just a little bit crazy.

5) Random flowers from an anonymous sender (not my husband). I think I know who it was, because she's the same person that I'm specifically talking about in #4 (although there are a lot of people who also fit this description).

6) Blogs of people I don't even know that remind me to look for the good in everything. (I just realized that I have 115 blogs on my Google Reader...that's a lot)

7) I won a contest! I correctly guessed what day would be the first official, measurable snow in Alaska where Scribbit lives. (You should read her. She is awesome.) Anyways, my awesome prize came in the mail on Monday and absolutely made my day! Such a simple little thing, but it really made me happy. Scribbit, if you happen to read this, thank you. He's such a sweet little guy :) and you can't even imagine how perfect the timing was! Also, you have really pretty handwriting (and I am very random). Anyways, I'm posting pictures of the coolest contest prize ever.

He is a Plaja Pet. (The link is to a giveaway Scribbit did last month, not to the contest. You can find the link to the contest here, and here is where she says that I won...along with three others. Way to go, us! The announcement of winners is at the bottom, but you should really read the story at the top of the post first, because it's amazing.)

Here he is:

Magnetic head.

Magnetic tail.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to get a couple more at some point, because I think it would be so much fun to rearrange the parts! Does that make me weird/disturbed? (Don't answer that.)

My missionary

A lot of you probably know that Brother1 left last week to serve a two-year full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is currently in the Missionary Training Center (MTC) here in P-town.

And since we live just down the street from the MTC, my dad and my brother flew out from NC last Monday to stay a few days and pick up a few last-minute items so they didn't have to cart them cross-country.

Brother1 went into the MTC last Wednesday, 8 October. Husband was able to get off work too, so the four of us went for his orientation.

Yes, I cried. But only a bit. And mostly because I'm so proud!

I cry a lot (did you read my last post?). It's something I get from my mother.

But at least I wasn't having a complete emotional breakdown (we did see a couple of those, but Brother2 (age 16) was sad we didn't see anybody pass out).

I don't have any pictures because my camera battery was dead (I didn't realize it until it was too late to charge it). Brother1 has some on his camera, and I told him to email them to me/the family, but I don't have them yet. When I do, I'll post them.

Daddy sent him a letter almost as soon as we got back from dropping him off (I hear that this is a very good thing. Mail is good. And not getting mail for a week is not good.) and I sent him one a couple of days later. My family got their first letter on Saturday, and I got mine today. HURRAY! It was kind of a crappy sort of day, so it made me very happy to find that in my mailbox when I got home. He is so cheerful and upbeat. He sounds like he is learning a lot and having a great experience so far. I just couldn't be prouder of my missionary!

Oh me, oh my

Want to know something pathetic? Well, ok, 2 things.

1) I haven't posted in two weeks.

2) The last post was a tag thing, and this post is a tag thing.

Oops.

It's been a busy couple of weeks, so I've got some catching up to do on posting. I'll be posting a couple more tonight as well.

Jenilee (my beautiful awesome and amazing cousin) did this on her blog and tagged everybody who read it. Since I read it, I guess that means me. Sorry for all you people who don't like these things. I'm not going to tag anybody specific, so do it if you have time!

I am: happy
I know: I am loved
I want: to know that my family's future is secure
I Have: the best family (all of them, and there are a lot! and by the way, this includes the vast majority of you who are reading, whether literally related or not)
I dislike: politics
I miss: NC fall weather and colors
I feel: stressed (oh, school)

Stuff of absolutely no consequence

Sometimes we watch the show How It's Made on Discovery. It's pretty cool most of the time. Last night one of the segments was about "sanitary napkins." It was weird. But interesting. They even gave instructions for how to use them...personally, I think it's pretty self-explanatory! But it cracked me up. Is it appropriate to talk about this on a blog? Oh well, I just did!

----

Last night we were hanging out with my friend Christina. She wanted to go to Best Buy to get the Iron Man DVD that just came out. While we were there, we also looked at all the awesome Disney movies that are currently available (does anyone else have a problem with the "Disney Vault"? Because I think it's dumb that they lock away their movies and then charge so much for them when they finally release them again for a short time!) and I just couldn't resist buying one of my favorite movies I used to watch as a girl -- Bedknobs and Broomsticks with the fabulous Angela Lansbury (also the voice of Mrs. Potts of Beauty and the Beast) and David Tomlinson (Mr. Banks on Mary Poppins)! Awesome. And it was one of the cheaper Disney movies. I watched it last night, too. Husband thinks it's ridiculous, but I love it.

Did you know it was based on a book? From what I remember, it isn't much like the book, but they're both good. In 4th grade I did one of my book reports on it (we had to do one every couple of weeks). If we made some sort of visual aid, we got extra points. I made a bed and painted one of the knobs yellow instead of brown. It was a pretty amazing bed, if I do say so myself.

----

A few months ago I blogged about how I kept hitting my head on stuff. I am pleased to say that I am recovered from that disease now, but it must be contagious, because Husband's got it! He's hit his head at least 3 times in the last 3 days. Since he laughed at me, I feel justified laughing at him. That's wrong of me, very wrong. I'll be nice now. But it is pretty funny!

There are a lot of links in this post. Sorry.

Random Observations

Here are a couple of things that I saw on campus the other day.

(1) The quickest way to get to my Monday afternoon class is through the BYU Bookstore. The other day as I approached the entrance (for those of you who know the layout, I'm talking about the one by womens' clothing), I saw a line of people blocking the doorway. After a struggle to get through, I looked over to see what was the holdup. I saw a woman holding a camera facing a man and two women posing for a picture. All the people in the doorway were standing in line for a picture! Since I couldn't see who it was, I looked around for a sign. And then I wanted to go back and stand in line. Because, "OH MY HECK IT'S KIRBY HEYBORNE!!" I'm being sarcastic here. But it really was Kirby. I'm just not that silly :)

(2) Some people have absolutely no sense of what items of clothing should and should not be worn together, even when they're trying to keep up with current "fashion" (I use that term loosely because what is "fashionable" or "trendy" right now is really awful). Case in point: I saw a girl who was wearing this ensemble:
-shiny/sparkly mustard yellow flats/sneakers
-black and white diagonally checked asymmetrical knee-length skirt
-bright pink tshirt
-purple chunky necklace
-bright blue scarf wrapped several times tightly around her neck and tied there
-early 90s glasses, and I'm pretty sure the glass was fake.
Personally, I don't think that any of these pieces should be worn, ever, let alone in combination! But I'm not judging her. I just think she's a little...misguided. And this sort of thing is normal!

I'm an awful person. Shame on me.

An update

It's been a couple of weeks since I actually sat down to write a blog post. But, I have been keeping a list! So hold onto your hats, people, because it's going to be a whirlwind of a ride!

Or probably not.

My life isn't that exciting.

But there will be several posts coming in the next few days, so watch out for 'em.

PS to Jenilee - You've commented on my last post ... what, 3 times? Sorry about that. Now when you have a reply to some comment I make on one of your posts, you have somewhere new to put it! Hurrah!

Bug bites

I have three of them. On my face.

One is on the side of my nose, almost in the corner of my eye.

The other two are right next to each other, smack in the middle of my forehead.

They itch.

Ruth

Ruth came over this afternoon. She had a random set of queen-size sheets/comforter etc. that she doesn't need/want (her bed is a twin). Apparently her mother forced her to take it. So she gave it to us :)

And when she brought that over, she stayed to visit for a while.

One problem: She had to be at work at 1:30. In Spanish Fork. And she didn't get to my house until 12:15-ish. And we talk a lot.

I finally had to kick her out a little after 1.

I wonder if she made it to work on time?

My mother is not being nice

When I say "not nice," I mean she's been picking on me.

So I called my mom to tell her stories about my day, which has been a good day, but quite long and rather stressful. I just got off the phone with her. We'd been talking for almost an hour. I think my call summary said 52 minutes. This is normal. We are both random, talkative people. It's fun. We would've talked longer, but she abandoned me. For her mother. Who is quite a bit like both of us in the talkative department. Those fragments were intentional. Also, I'm not upset that my mother is talking to my grandma instead of to me. Besides, she'll call me back :)

Exhibit A of "My mother is not nice."

1. She informed me that she wished I was there because she was just taking some warm blonde brownies out of the oven. Ok, that was so not fair. I could go for a blonde brownie, oh yes, I could. Oh, and then she went on and on about how she had brownies she wished she could share with me. Yeah right.

2. Sometimes when I am stressed out I rant. Actually, I always rant when I am stressed out. I get very animated and talk very fast and jump from topic to topic and just generally don't make a whole lot of sense. I mentioned this to Mama and asked if she could understand me. She said, "Usually I can't, but right now I can." NOT TRUE, and not nice. Then she laughed at me, like she had just said the funniest thing ever.

3. Later on in the conversation, she informed me that she was eating a warm blonde brownie. Somehow the word "warm" makes it sound so much more delicious. (Is that just me?) Then she's all, "Can you smell it on my breath?" And then she breathed loudly into the phone.

Q.E.D.

(Latin. Quod erat demonstrandum. "That which was to be demonstrated." Basically, I've just shown you what I meant to show you.)

(Or you could pretend it stands for quod ego dico, which basically means "because I said so." Take your pick.)

Correction

I just realized that I am a negligent sister. Brother1's 19th birthday was last Friday (same as Husband's, in case you were wondering).

So, HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY BROTHER1.

He goes into the MTC in three and a half weeks. Crazy. What a great guy he has grown up into! I love my brother :)

And yes, I did call him on his birthday. Twice. I even sent a card in the mail. Just forgot to put it on the blog :)

All about me, because I'm conceited like that

And because my last post was all about Husband. Mostly, in case you were wondering what had happened to me.

Here is me right now (just so you know that I am actually still alive-and-kickin'):

Not the most flattering picture ever, but that's ok. At least you can tell it's me.

This week has been really good, actually. The second week of school and all that. My classes aren't kicking my butt (yet) so that's good. It won't be an easy semester by any means, but it should definitely be doable and possibly mostly enjoyable! Hoorah. Plus, it's one step closer to graduating.

Also, I get to go to the temple three times in three days! That makes me very very very happy. Earlier tonight I went and did a session with a good friend of mine. Her family used to live in my hometown years and years and years ago, and we played together when we were little, along with our brothers. Her older brother was six months younger than me, and my brother is six months younger than her. She and I actually got married 1 day apart (April 26 and 25, respectively) in the same temple this past spring. So it was really cool for the two of us to be able to go do a session together! It's been a while since I did a session as a patron, so that was awesome. I get to go tomorrow as a worker -- Friday morning is my weekly shift. Working in the temple has been such a blessing for me! I love being able to go and just feel the calm and the peace that is so much a part of that place. This week, I am lucky enough that I get to work TWO shifts! One of my good friends asked me to substitute for her on Saturday afternoon, which will make three times at the temple in three days. I can't think of a better way to spend my time!

Happy (Late) Birthday, & other stuff about Husband

I know, I'm a slacker. There just hasn't really been much to post about. But this will be a rather long post. Woohoo. You should all prepare to be amazed.

Last Friday was Husband's 23rd birthday. No, I did not forget about it. That's not what the "late" in the post title means. It simply means that I am quite late posting about it. To make up for my recent laxness in posting, I submit some photos of the event for your viewing pleasure. (Also, "laxness" is totally a real word. I thought I might have made it up, so I checked dictionary.com. It's a legitimate word.) (And now you can say that you learned something from my blog, unless you happen to be smarter than me and already knew that "laxness" was a real word.)

The birthday boy and his friend "Dan-at-work." Yes, that's what Husband actually calls him. They kind of act like idiots when they're together, sometimes. In case you couldn't guess that on your own. They make me laugh. Dan and his wife Amy came to the dinner party.

This is a picture of Peter (a good friend) and Ruth (my last roommate -- and one of my favorites!) in my kitchen. Peter loves to cook. And I mean he loves it. So much so, he volunteered -- volunteered, people! -- to cook a meal and a cake for the birthday party. And I've had Peter's cooking before, and there is no way I was going to say no to that when he was volunteering! I'd have to be delusional to refuse. He made some delicious pasta with 4-cheese sauce and chicken, plus a salad, rolls with a chicken-and-cream-cheese filling, fruit parfaits, a special mixed drink (non-alcoholic, of course :) haha), and a German chocolate cake. YUM. (Oh, and did I mention that Peter is one of my heroes? He's a soldier and came home a few months ago from spending a year in Iraq. I've been thinking about the people who help keep us safe a lot today, September 11. I find that I don't have the right words to write a post about that, but I've been thinking about it today. I'm so grateful for those who aren't afraid to do what's right!)

The only drawback to preparing a huge delicious meal! It was worth it, though. I totally intended to do the dishes on Saturday morning. But then Husband and I both fell asleep watching a movie later on in the night, and when we woke up the dishes were done! Dan and Amy left before the movie, but Peter and Ruth stayed late and did them all...did I tell you they're my heroes yet?

Amy and Ruth. And Peter's hand. Making bunny ears. Awesome.

Me and one of my lovely parfaits. Peter made the stuff for them, but I put them together. They were delicious. There was the crunchy layer with nuts and oatmeal and brown sugar, then there was the creamy layer with cream cheese and whipped cream, then the fruit layer of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Lather, rinse, repeat. Wow.
Funny story about how the parfait glasses found their way into my apartment. Friday morning Husband was at work, I was at the temple, and our back door was unlocked. Peter and Ruth brought the glasses over (they tried calling, but only got my voicemail, obviously, since I was in the temple) to leave them on our balcony, but then they decided to check the door. And it was unlocked. So they let themselves in. Peter left a comment on the whiteboard by the door, and Ruth left a note telling me they'd broken in smack in the middle of the floor (so I wouldn't miss it, I presume). Yeah. Thanks, guys. But really, Peter and Ruth are two of the only people I would trust to be in my apartment/house without me there, or even knowing about it. They're just awesome that way.

And finally, Peter and Ruth, the chef and the prankster extraordinaire. And also, two of my favorite people ever. In case you didn't know.

Since there aren't very many pictures of the birthday boy, here are a few more from other times.

I meant to post this one a long time ago, but kept forgetting. He made me some cookies one night (because I wanted them. So there.) and decided to be silly when putting them on the pan. (No, he did not do this because he didn't know any better. He was being obnoxious. And I might add that he was quite pleased with himself. He thinks he's rather clever. So do I, come to think of it. I laughed for 10 minutes.)
Right after this picture, he started to remove the excess dough, but I wouldn't let him. I wanted to see what they would look like when cooked. So here's that picture, in case any of you are like me.
And yes, they were delicious cookies. I'd actually love one right now...but I'm trying to cut back on sweets. Darn.

Here's what he's doing right now:
That is the twin bed my parents gave us for our second bedroom. It's quite convenient because that's the same room where the computer is. We can hang out together and be comfortable at the same time! Last night I fell asleep on that bed while Husband was on the computer.

WARNING: THE NEXT PHOTO IS RATHER GRAPHIC AND DISGUSTING. IN FACT I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHY I'M POSTING IT, EXCEPT THAT THIS IS A POST ALL ABOUT HUSBAND. SO DON'T SUE ME, YEAH? AND IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH OR SOMETHING, PLEASE PLEASE JUST SKIP THE REST OF THIS POST. THANK YOU.

This is Husband's ingrown toenail.
The same toenail that he refuses to go to the doctor about (he went back in January, and they claimed they fixed it, but they didn't, so he refuses to go again. I think this is worse, though). Question: How do you convince your husband that "operating" on your own ingrown toenail with a bobby pin you have bent open, a pair of flat-head tweezers, and bits of paper towels is NOT a good idea? Because it's disgusting. And highly unsanitary. And I wasn't joking about him digging at his toenail with a bobby pin. And he doesn't know that I'm posting this. And he probably won't be happy that I did. Oops. Husband, if you read this, I did it out of love. Really, I did.
